Jannis Kounellis
Untitled (Senza Titolo) (1994) is a diptych composed of two iron panels alternated by three oil lamps hanging from three hooked rods. Both iron panels are half covered by two different types of materials - sheets of lead for the one on the left and a military blanket for the other one. The use of such materials here is quite representative of the artist's practice. The artist is in fact known for the use of humble and often earthly materials that kept him strongly linked to the Arte Povera Movement. Here he clearly means to create a state of contraposition between the industrial (iron), the barbarous (fabric), and the domestic (oil lamps). Like much of Kounellis’ production, this artwork falls within standard sizes: the artist’s walls, a double bed, and a door. These standard measures, repeated again and again and designed and optimized to reflect the proportions of a body, place the human dimension at the heart of Kounellis’ production.
