Liang Shaoji

More than a decade ago, Liang Shaoji found the remains of a towering ancient tree at the entrance of a village in Shuinan Village, Tiantai County, the largest village community in Zhejiang. This piece of camphor tree from the Tang dynasty was ruthlessly deconstructed in the movement of rural urbanization and was left in the bamboo bushes. Looking at the intricate roots and branches, the artist realized the vastness of history and the transience of human life, so he decided to collect the remains of the ancient camphor tree to create artwork. The silk spun by the silkworms contains a large amount of silk protein, an amino acid that nourishes life. When the silk covers the remains of the camphor tree, it imbues the dead tree with life, which becomes a life ritual of healing, solace, self-salvation, and birth. The sculptures, which resemble shifting "heavy clouds," are the manifestation of existence and beings.
